Our People

GASTEC at CRE (GaC)

Not only are our people our most valuable assets, they are also a great bunch to work with.

We are a collection of skilled individuals, most of whom come from highly technical backgrounds. More than half have first degrees and about a third of them also possess post-grad qualifications. However, it is our experience of interpreting complex scientific issues in real world scenarios that seems to set us apart from our competitors.

Most people will only come across us in our professional capacities either in the laboratory, training rooms, on-site in field trials, or in rather highbrow meetings. So in this section we have tried to show our lighter side by recording little snippets about ourselves that you might find amusing, touching, or even surprising.

Our General Manager, Mark is Mr GaC! An internationally recognised chemical engineer, Mark never shies away from a technical problem - to the rest of us it seems that the harder the question, the more he relishes the challenge! Don't get him started on Welsh Blacks though unless you've a week to spare!

Paul came to Stoke Orchard for six months in 1978 to make petrol and we still can't get rid of him! Very much the face of GaC, he is now responsible for all of GaC's commercial dealings and also represents the company on various committees and boards etc. Off duty, he is never far away from a rugby pitch.

Here's our numbers man - we call him "the bean counter"! There are rumours that he is still trying to spend white fivers! A supporter of one of the junior rugby teams in the area, Colin's other sporting credentials include golf and skittles!

Iain heads up our consulting division ["The Geeks" as we like to call them], so we think that makes him head geek. Ask him about his little ones and he won't mention family - it's his ducklings you'll be discussing!

James escaped for 5 years to live in Provence and the Ardeche, but he returned! Newly married and father of a gorgeous little girl, it's great to have him back. Currently he is heading up the appliance testing part of the business and using his considerable skills on behalf of our carbon verification company c:sense!

Mavis is acknowledged as one of the most knowledgable training coordinators and assessment centre managers in the country. In addition, if you want something growing - she's your green-fingered girl.

Andy is our in-house assessor. He is the person who assesses the competence of gas operatives, oil technicians and solid fuel appliance installers so that they can register with Gas Safe, OFTEC, CORGI (Northern Ireland) and/or HETAS. Off duty, he is an avid sci-fi reader.

Tracy has worked for Paul for 12 years and accompanied him to GaC. Renowned for her bubbly character, she pretty much runs the show from the back office. Her off duty time is dominated by chasing after her little boy.

Tim manages the consultancy office and is charged with looking after the more challenging special projects where his considerable IT skills get put to good use.

Dick is our resident anti-submarine specialist - a skill not often used in rural Gloucestershire, but he is also a metereologist so maybe he knows something we don't?! On leaving the navy, Dick wanted to "make a difference"- well he has achieved that by project managing our heat pump trial and becoming a new Dad!

George (our resident tree-hugger from the Forest of Dean) manages quite a few of our field monitoring projects as part of the energy consulting business and is spearheading our drive for onsite renewable and sustainable energy under the "Corporate Social Responsibility" banner.

When we first met Helen, we were bowled over by her academic qualifications. She is now responsible for the majority of our field trial data analysis, in between knitting and wedding preparations.

Our very own City Trader, Nikhil certainly seems to have got out just in time. Now heavily involved in our energy consulting business, he is certainly demonstrating his green credentials - he pulled together our consultation work on Document J for example.

A recent addition to our energy consulting team, Laura knows a thing or two about carbon monoxide detectors having completed a market survey to advise government ahead of changes to the building regulations. Laura's eco-lifestyle is proven by her commitment to travelling everywhere by train!

Andy heads up the lab team for us. When not working football and cricket are his sporting passions [oh and skittles too!]. If you can persuade him, he does a very passable and hilarious "Jethro" impersonation.

There's not much John hasn't experienced in the solid fuel field. He is an internationally recognised authority on manufactured fuels and looks after our solid fuel testing lab. When not working, he is very involved in his local community and also acts as census officer in his area.

Shane, our own Mr Fitness, thinks nothing of cycling 15 miles in his lunch break [on the rare occasion he takes one]. Also a keen golfer - he recently had a couple of rounds at the Belfry! When it comes to testing some of the more challenging appliances - he's certainly got what it takes!

Jon lists cricket amongst his pastimes and is also a cyclist who can be found struggling along the local lanes [in fair weather]. Since returning to the fold after a short absence with our old environmental business, Jon is now expert at testing wood-burning appliances - he's just returned from testing products in the USA!

Shoki's been there and done that! He covers more miles than anyone else in the company - mainly carrying out Product Surveillance.
Jim was caught climbing over the wall at Gloucester RFC this season; the police officer said "Shame on you, you're a season ticket holder, so you just get back in there and watch!".

Lesley is a legend in netball circles where she still officiates at National level. Being that fearless [have you seen International netball players?] makes her the ideal choice as Quality Manager and Lead Auditor for our carbon verification business. A keen cyclist, she is often overtaken by milk floats and snails en route to the office!

Electricity is Bob's thing. He pulls our efforts together for manufacturers with a low voltage requirement. When not testing stuff, photography is his main hobby and the girls reckon he keeps the sandwich machine in profit.

Bill is another cyclist - very serious, head down, racing type rather than "tum-dee-tum look at the flowers". Bill keeps the labs going by helping the guys with installations and being our general factotum.

Fraser is our certification officer - when it comes to deciding who gets certified, he's your man [we refuse to let him loose on the management!]. As a Man Utd supporter he knows little about sport!

Big Phil is a bit broken at the moment - awaiting a new hip. We're certainly missing his engineering expertise as much as his muscle!
Julie is really enjoying her new role in the main office, and is fascinated by the range of characters she works with. When she's not keeping things running smoothly here, she's a keen gardener.
Jane is our friendly Girl Monday and Wednesday in the main office and Girl Tuesday and Thursday in the Training Centre. In between she's busy gardening and sewing.
