Climate Change Background

GASTEC at CRE (GaC)

The following titles are for some of the current legislation designed to engage as many companies and individuals as possible in the collective aim to reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions produced by mankind.
Climate change and global warming are complex and emotive topics and opinions range from the “business as usual let nature take its course” viewpoint through the “its almost certainly too late but let’s give it our best anyway” brigade to the “we can make a difference if we all pull together” clan. Whatever your views, both the general public and industry face enormous challenges as we enter the low carbon future of the 21st century.
As it is becoming compulsory for many industries to have their CO2 emissions capped and reductions targeted, it has made independent verification of these emissions and associated monitoring and reporting methodologies mandatory. As accredited verifiers, c:sense are ready and able to assist, so call us when you need to.

Kyoto Protocol
The Protocol commits industrialised countries to reduce their collective greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by at least 5% compared to the 1990 level by the period 2008 - 2012.

Climate Change Levy (CCL)
The CCL is an energy tax that adds 15% to typical energy bills. However, companies which are intensive users of energy can mitigate the cost of this tax by reducing emissions.

Climate Change Agreement (CCA)
The Government recognised the need for special help to energy intense industries exposed to the CCL and so offered an 80% reduction for agreeing to challenging targets for improving their energy efficiency or reducing their carbon emissions.

UK Emissions Trading Scheme (UK ETS)
The UK ETS enables larger greenhouse gas emitters to buy allowances to meet emission reduction targets or sell any over achievements.

EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS)
The EU greenhouse gas trading scheme (EU ETS) is a EU-wide scheme for trading CO2 allowances, established on 23 October 2003. The Aviation Sector has been added to the scheme and their Benchmarking Year starts 1st January 2010.

Carbon Emissions Reduction Target (CERT)
This is the Government's main policy for reducing carbon from existing households, in conjunction with the main energy suppliers. The latest news on CERT.

CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme
The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme (formerly known as the Carbon Reduction Commitment) is the UK's mandatory climate change and energy saving scheme, aimed at the larger energy users not included in the other schemes shown above. The scheme is due to start in April 2010, it is central to the UK’s strategy for improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon dioxide emissions, as set out in the Climate Change Act 2008.
