The EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) is one of the key “cap & trade” policies intended to help meet GHG reduction targets and, in October 2008, the European Council decided to make it obligatory for aircraft operators, flying to or taking off from EU airports, to participate in the CO2 emissions trading scheme.

Our dedicated c:sense verification staff will be ready to play their part in the formal assessment of Annual Emissions Reports in early 2011 see “Carbon Verification.” pages, but there are also pre-verification client services to consider during the crucially important 2010 “Benchmarking Year”.

Because the EU ETS is new to many aircraft operators, and there are 891 listed for UK regulation, they may need extra confidence that their monitoring procedures fully comply with the requirements, especially since non conformance can attract significant penalties. Then there is the very important need to minimise the disruption to businesses in this very cut-throat sector and difficult trading conditions.

It is our experience that the early adoption of a practical, commonsense, verifier viewpoint is highly beneficial and allows any non conformity in procedures to be spotted and corrected as they are discovered. This is a much less painful experience than trying to adapt a year’s worth of inappropriate information when reporting deadlines get every closer.
