A common feature of entry into carbon and energy management projects off all kinds is the question “Where are we now?”
In other words, what is the baseline of our “normal” energy usage and/or our typical CO2 emissions? Often schemes kick-off using best guess figures only to realise that an accurate baseline is a prerequisite to subsequent reliable assessment of energy reduction measures.
Gastec engineers have carried out major UK wide energy monitoring projects in order to gain confidence in energy figures by installing secondary metering in order to double check consumption details given on utility bills. Since standard emission factors relate energy consumption to CO2 emissions, it pays (in more ways than one) to measure the amount of energy used as accurately as possible. Remember the old adage “You cannot control what you do not measure”.
