GASTEC at CRE (GaC)

The Boiler Efficiency Directive covers all domestic boilers fuelled by gas and/or oil.

Under our Notified Body status - Boiler Efficiency Directive 92/42/EEC - the most common standards GaC currently uses for guidance include [but are not limited to]:

  • BS EN 677:1998 – Gas fired central heating boilers – specific requirements for condensing boilers with a nominal heat input not exceeding 70kW
  • BS EN 483:2000 - Gas fired central heating boilers – Type C boilers with a nominal heat input not exceeding 70kW
  • BS EN 303-2:1999 – Heating boilers with forced draught burners – special requirements for boilers with atomising oil burners
  • BSEN303-3:1999 – Heating boilers – Gas fired central heating boilers–assembly comprising a boiler body and a forced draught burner
  • BSEN 303-4:1999 – Heating boilers with forced draught burners – with outputs up to 70kW and a maximum operating pressure of 3bar
  • BS EN 304:1992 – Heating boilers – test code for heating boilers for atomising oil burners
  • BSEN297:1994 – Gas fired central heating boilers – type B11 and B11 BS boilers fitted with atmospheric burners of nominal heat input not exceeding 70kW
  • OFS A100 – Condensing and non-condensing heating boilers with atomising burners outputs up to 70kW
  • BS845:1987 [parts 1 and 2] – Assessing thermal performance of boilers for steam, hot water and high temperature heat transfer fluids
GaC has been at the forefront of the use of BS845 to close the energy balance during continuous test work. Although not definitive, this technique is extremely useful at verifying useful efficiencies.

GaC’s full scope of accreditation can be seen at:

The relevant scope of accreditations for our Dutch laboratories can be seen at:

Please note that not every test method listed above is covered by our UKAS accreditation, but GaC applies the same technical rigour to all its procedures as if for UKAS accreditation; as a matter of policy GaC seeks to include all test methods in its UKAS accreditation and we are currently in the process of applying to include EN304 amongst others in our scope of accreditation.

GaC is well versed in the competencies of many of the European test laboratories with regard to the accuracy of boiler efficiency measurement. It produced a report upon this matter for the EST in December 2004, although many of the recommendations (especially regarding the inspection of sovereign Notified Bodies) will be difficult to implement.
