GASTEC at CRE

Electrical Consumption/Standby

GASTEC at CRE (GaC)

GaC measures electrical power usage during operation and standby on a range of products.

A particular example is the Energy Saving Recommended Test Method for gas boiler electrical standby power consumption.

Did you know that a limit of standby power usage for domestic products has now been made law?

In 2005, an estimated 47TWh corresponding to 19 million T of CO2 was used on domestic products in the standby mode.

If you are a manufacturer or a distributor of domestic products, it is your responsibility to ensure compliance.

The requirements in summary are:

Off Mode

Standby

On or off with status light showing

From 07/01/2010

≤ 1W

≤ 1W

≤ 2W

From 07/01/2013

≤ .5W

≤ .5W

≤ 1W

In order to assess your own product you must have the calibrated equipment required to meet the requirements of EN60301 (Household electrical appliances - Measurement of standby power).

This requires:

  • Stabilised supply with 1% for voltage and frequency
  • Supply waveform harmonics not to exceed 2%
  • Power measurement accuracy 0.01W (at 95% confidence level)
  • Test room at 23C and 0.5m/s air speed

OR we can do it for you, providing you with an independent report stating the consumption.

This directive is estimated to save 35TWh by 2020 (equivalent to 14 million tonnes of CO2).
